Ranch hand/ cowboy/ Graizer


DURATION: Position is year-round, full-time. 

POSITION EFFECTIVENESS AREAS AND JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:  

 Effectiveness areas:

  • Low-stress Livestock Handling (click here for more info)
  • Implementing graze plans and practicing SLS graze methods
  • Sustaining herd health
  • Applying safe, common-sense horsemanship and above-average roping ability
  • Utilizing safe, efficient equipment operation skills

Job duties:

  • Livestock handling and herding
  • Doctoring and processing livestock, including pasture doctoring
  • Calving 1st calf heifers in a remote, mountainous environment
  • Spring and water tank maintenance
  • Fence building and repair, including extensive polywire use
  • General maintenance of buildings and equipment
  • Taking care of weaned
  • calves over the winter:  feeding, caking, exercising, monitoring water and feed intake, salt and mineral consumption
  • Monitoring rangeland conditions and livestock nutrition and health
  • Monitoring animal behavior in order to identify problems or opportunities
  • Butchering lambs
  • Other ranch work which may include, but not limited to:  working with and tending to the sheep flock, farming, welding and fabricating, carpentry work, irrigating, haying, and equipment operation
  • Salt and mineral distribution
  • Weed spraying
  • Horseshoeing

 THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING WORK-RELATED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Strong horsemanship skills in rough terrain
  2. Ability to rope and doctor cattle in pastures
  3. Livestock experience
  4. Ability to ride ATV
  5. Walking, hiking several miles in a day
  6. Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  7. Willingness and ability to work long hours and do rigorous physical work

 COMPENSATION:

  1. Competitive salary based on experience and skill set, 401(k), profit sharing, beef, and paid vacation.
  2. Housing:  3-bedroom, 2-bath house at ranch headquarters located 32 miles south of Cascade, MT.
